Laser Treatment

A laser is a narrow beam of light than when targeted at an area can burn tissues.  Lasers can destroy small cancers or treat abnormal looking cells that may grow into cancer in the future.  They can also be used to control symptoms such as bleeding or open up blockages in the airways.  If the laser is used to treat a blockage, the treatment can cause a rapid improvement in your symptoms.  It may need to be repeated if the blockage recurs.

To have laser treatment, you will need a bronchoscopy to ensure the laser is in position and the right area is being treated.  If the laser is being used to treat a blockage you may need to come into hospital a day or two before the test is carried out.
